Bus Restaurant

Installation of a ventilation system in a vegan restaurant on a mobile Routemaster bus.

Contract Value: Not disclosed
Date: 2009
Local Authority: Tower Hamlets, London

CONTEXT

The local authority imposed a requirement that the restaurant fit an odour control measure on the kitchen extract ventilation system.

THE CHALLENGE

We had to create a kitchen ventilation system for the vegan restaurant, which was a partly converted old Routemaster bus - an iconic red double-decker London bus. There was limited space on the interior of the bus so the ventilation had to be built on its exterior. The system had to be both functional and sympathetic to the aesthetics of the bus.

OUR SOLUTION

Consolux created a design that complied with both Environmental Health Department and Standard DW172 requirements.

The installation included fans and a purified air filter with an odour neutraliser to fulfil the requirements of the local authority.  In addition, the ventilation system was interlocked with the gas supply to the cooking ranges to comply with British Standards BS 6173 – the modified code of practice for interlocking and isolating the gas supply in the event of a ventilation canopy failure.
